Hawks Open CIAA Northern Division Play with 79-54 Win over Elizabeth City State

Box Score ELIZABETH CITY, NC- The Chowan University women's basketball team earned their fifth straight win on Saturday afternoon with a 79-54 win over Elizabeth City State University in CIAA Northern Division play. The Hawks improve to 12-5 overall and 6-1 in CIAA play while the Lady Vikings slip to 4-11 on the year and 1-6 in the league.  The Hawks' five-game win streak is the longest for the women's basketball program since the 2008-09 and 2010-11 seasons  when the team won five straight contests.

Jordan Payne led all players in the game with 24 points in the victory for Chowan. Dhyamond Crenshaw added 13 points and nine rebounds (two offensive, seven defensive) while Alisha Mobley and Danielle Weldon scored 11 points and 10 points, respectively.

Breona Jones paced the Lady Vikings with 22 points in the setback. Jasmine Nixon scored 13 points with Imani Heggins notching nine points and nine rebounds (four offensive, five defensive).

Elizabeth City State controlled the momentum of the game during the first two quarters. The Lady Vikings led by as many as nine points (15-6) with 1:34 left on the clock in the first quarter before two free throws by Payne and a layup by Weldon made the score 15-10 after the first ten minutes of play.

The Lady Vikings led 23-15 with 4:59 on the clock before a 6-0 run by Chowan put the Hawks within striking distance during the final moments of the second quarter. Payne's free throw with 24 seconds remaining left Elizabeth City State clinging to a 25-23 lead heading into halftime.

The momentum quickly shifted in favor of the Hawks after Payne opened the third quarter with a layup. A steal by Mercedes Tapia led to another bucket by Payne, resulting in the first lead of the game for the Hawks (27-25). With 4:06 left in the third quarter, a three pointer by Tapia followed by a layup by Crenshaw gave Chowan a commanding 45-34 lead. The Hawks carried a 53-37 advantage heading into the fourth quarter and led by 18 points or more for the remainder of the contest before securing the 79-54 win with a jumper by Courtni Wiliams.

The Hawks return to action on January 20th as Chowan plays host to Virginia State University. Tip-off for the CIAA Northern Division contest is slated for 5:30pm.
