Box Score AHOSKIE, NC-The Chowan University men's basketball team defeated back-to-back defending CIAA Champion, Livingstone College on Monday evening in a 73-70 decision. The Hawks improve to 12-3 overall and 5-0 in CIAA play with the win while the Blue Blears slide to 7-8 on the season and 2-2 in the league. The victory marked the seventh straight win for Chowan.
Jimmy Wilson drained 18 points for Livingstone in the setback while Daryl Trynham and Ty Newman added 15 points and 12 points, respectively. Cordero Holt, Robert Flint, and Wilson each grabbed seven rebounds in the loss.
Kortez Smith netted his 1,000
th career point in the victory and scored 19 points in the contest. He is the 11
th player in program history to achieve the feat.
Joe Goodwin added 13 points and nine rebounds while
Marco Haskins added 12 points for the Chowan Blue and White.
Chowan raced to a 9-2 lead at the start of the first half, taking control right from the start. The Hawks extended their advantage to as many as 17 points after a free throw by
Jeremy Smith with 8:05 on the clock, but the Blue Bears fought back to cut the deficit to six points (41-35) by the end of the first half.
Newman's jumper with 15:40 on the clock tied the score 43-43, and a three-pointer by Trynham gave the Blue Bears their first lead of the contest on Livingstone's next possession. The Hawks fought back to knot the score six times before establishing the lead for good after three made free throws by
Kortez Smith with 4:02 left in the game.
Livingstone pulled within one point (71-70) with 37 seconds remaining in the contest but two made free throws by
Andrew Lopez secured the victory for the Chowan Blue and White.
The Hawks return to action on January 14
th when they travel to compete against Saint Augustine's in CIAA crossover play. Tip-off is slated for 7:30pm.
