Box Score 2 RALEIGH, NC- The Chowan University softball team secured a spot in the CIAA Softball Championship semifinal game with two victories on Thursday afternoon. The Hawks hung on for a 4-1 win against Johnson C. Smith in the first game of the day before topping Winston-Salem State University 5-2.
In game one, the Hawks used
Tori Cragan's RBI single and
Katlyn Brummett's sacrifice fly in the bottom of the third to grab a 2-0 lead. A solo homerun by Jocelyn Hernandez in the top of the fourth put the Golden Bulls on the scoreboard but
Tina White's double and
Chandler Bridges' RBI singles in the bottom of the frame gave the Hawks all they would need to secure the win in game one.
Bridges, Cragan,
Courtney Diamond and White all contributed to Chowan's five hits in the first game.
Courtney Groce held Johnson C. Smith to three runs in seven innings of work.
The Hawks jumped out to an early lead in their second game of the day when infield singles by
Rachel Clark and
Danielle Baccus gave Chowan a 2-0 edge in the bottom of the second. The Lady Rams plated one run in the top of the third before a Winston-Salem State error in the fifth allowed the Hawks to pull away 3-1. In the bottom of the sixth, Bridges drew a bases loaded walk and Cragan was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded, allowing the Hawks to enjoy a 5-1 advantage. The Lady Rams mustered one additional run in the seventh but it was not enough to overcome the deficit.
Baccus and White both collected two hits at the plate for the Chowan Blue and White.
Alora Lincoln earned the win on the mound. She tossed all seven innings while scattering five hits.
Weather permitting; Chowan will face Saint Augustine's University on Friday at 12:30pm at the Walnut Creek Softball Complex.
