Hawks Claim CIAA Northern Division Crown with Sweep of Bowie State

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 BOWIE, MD- The Chowan University softball team clinched the CIAA Northern Division title on Sunday afternoon with two road wins against Bowie State University.  The Hawks earned a 3-0 victory in the first game before topping the Lady Bulldogs 10-6 in thrilling fashion in the nightcap.  Chowan escapes CIAA regular season play with their fifth divisional title in program history.

The Hawks advance to the CIAA Championship with a 22-12 overall record, 15-1 mark in CIAA play and a 9-1 record in the CIAA Northern Division.  Chowan will enter as the top seed from the Northern Division.  The Lady Bulldogs now hold a 13-17 overall record, 9-7 mark in the league and 6-4 record in divisional play.
In the opening game, the Hawks and Lady Bulldogs battled through three scoreless innings before Chowan's offense managed to break the silence.  With runners on second and third in the top of the fourth, a miscue by Bowie State in the outfield led to two-runs for the Hawks.  Tina White extended Chowan's lead with a solo homerun to left field in the top of the sixth, providing all the momentum the Hawks would need to secure the victory.

Alora Lincoln threw her second shutout out in as many days on the mound for the Chowan Blue and White.  She scattered six hits over the course of seven innings and stranded six Lady Bulldogs' runners to earn the win for the Hawks.

Tori Cragan and Courtney Diamond each tallied two hits for the Hawks in the contest.  White had the lone RBI in the victory.

Nicoleen Ochoa took the loss for Bowie State.  She gave up three runs (one earned) off of nine hits while striking out three batters. Ochoa also paced the Lady Bulldogs at the plate with two hits while Hailey Bethke also notched two hits in the setback.

Game two proved to be a marathon contest as both teams battled for ten innings before the Hawks emerged victorious.  The Lady Bulldogs jumped to a 3-0 lead in the bottom of the second using two fielder's choices and a wild pitch.  Bowie State tacked on a run in the bottom of the third with a wild pitch to take a 4-0 lead.

White's two-run single down the right field line and Cragan's two-run double down the left field line knotted the score in the top of the fifth.  Both teams failed to score in the seventh, forcing the contest into extra innings.  The Hawks exchanged runs in the eighth and ninth innings, leaving the score iced 6-6 heading into the tenth frame.

White hit an RBI single to right field and Cragan blasted a three-run homerun in the top of the tenth to push the Hawks ahead 10-6.  The offensive surge proved to be enough as Chowan retired the Lady Bulldogs in order to secure the victory.

Danielle Baccus paced the Hawks with three hits in the win.  Cragan tallied two hits and six RBI while White also notched two hits and knocked in three RBI.

Kayla Robins started the game and tossed 2.1 innings, surrendering four runs (four earned). Courtney Groce entered the game in-relief and threw 7.2 innings in the contest to earn the win on the mound.  She held the Lady Bulldogs to two runs off of six hits.

Ochoa and Jacqueline had two hits in the setback.  Ochoa threw nine of the ten innings in the loss on the mound.  She surrendered 10 runs (five earned) off of nine hits.
