Box Score MURFREESBORO- The Chowan University softball team split a pair of games with the visiting Lees-McRae Bobcats on Saturday afternoon. The Hawks topped the Bobcats 6-0 in the first game but dropped a 5-3 decision in the nightcap. Chowan moves to 5-5 on the season while Lees-McRae stands 2-12 after Saturday's contests.
The Hawks' game against the Bobcats served as Strike Out Cancer Day for the softball program.
In game one the Hawks pulled ahead 2-0 in the bottom of the third inning using back-to-back RBI singles by
Tori Cragan and
Courtney Diamond. Chowan tacked on two additional runs in the fifth using
Brook Bowen's two-run infield single.
Chandler Bridges' triple down the left field line followed by Cragan's RBI double in the bottom of the sixth gave the Hawks a 6-0 advantage and secured the victory for the Blue and White.
Alora Lincoln went the distance for the Hawks on the mound, holding the Bobcats to three hits in the shutout win. Taylor Billings took the loss for Lees-McRae after surrendering six runs (all earned) in 5.2 innings of work. Amanda Decker collected two of the Bobcats' three-hits in the setback.
Chowan went to work early in the second contest of the day, plating one run off of Katelyn Brummett's RBI single to pull away 1-0 after one inning of play.
In the top of the sixth, Kara Travis' single up the middle allowed Sara Weatherholz to score and knotted the score 1-1. The Bobcats plated four runs in the top of the seventh using Tori Wright's two-run homerun, a Hawk error and RBI double by Sarah Stallings to take a 5-1 lead.
In the bottom of the frame, an error by Lees-McRae and bases loaded walk made the score 5-3 but the Bobcats worked out of a bases loaded jam with a double play to earn the win.
Charlie Dutton earned the victory on the mound for Lees-McRae, holding the Hawks to four hits while striking out eight batters. Brummett had two of the Hawks' four hits in the nightcap.
Courtney Groce took the loss on the mound. She threw 6.1 innings in the contest and surrendered three runs (two earned) while fanning five batters.
Kayla Robins entered the contest in-relief of Groce and gave up two runs on the mound.
Chowan returns to action on March 9
th when the Hawks travel to Mars Hill for a doubleheader match-up. First-pitch is scheduled for 5:00pm in Lexington, North Carolina.
