Box Score SALISBURY, NC- The Chowan University lacrosse team suffered a 20-7 setback against Catawba College on Monday afternoon. The Hawks fall to 3-6 on the season while the Indians improve to 7-5 on the year with the victory.
Adriea Herndon paced the Hawks with three goals in the setback.
Mackenzie Reid added two scores for Chowan while
Tyra Simons and
Kamile Smith each added a goal in the loss.
Rachael Cramer made five saves in goal for the Hawks.
Ten different players contributed to 20 goals for Catawba led by Nicolette Salay with five goals in the win. Kourtney Jones and Alyssa Corace each scored three times for the Indians while Kirstyn Kruse and Megan Shortt chipped in two goals apiece. Caroline Beggs, Meredith Jones, Hannah Scott, Abby Moore and Kaleigh Reidy all found the back of the net for Catawba.
Shortt put the Indians on the board two minutes into the contest to give Catawba an early lead. Simons answered back for the Hawks with an unassisted goal as she found the back of the net with 28:20 on the clock to knot the score 1-1. Four unanswered goals by Catabwa left the Hawks trailing 5-1 before Smith's draw control led to a score with 24:25 left in the first period. The Indians built their lead to 11-2 before Reid and Herndon scored back-to-back goals for the Chowan Blue and White to make the score 11-4 at the 14:01 mark.
A ground ball pickup by Herndon with 7:23 left in the first period led to her second goal of the game and gave the Hawks some additional offensive momentum but Jones promptly answered with back-to-back goals for Catawba to give the Indians a 13-5 advantage at the 5:56 mark.
After a quick start by the Indians, the Hawks buckled down to restrain Catawba offensively near the end of the first period, but Chowan still trailed 15-5 heading into halftime.
The Indians opened the second period with four unanswered goals before Reid scored with 12:06 remaining in the contest. Catawba added one additional goal to take a 20-6 advantage before Herndon scored for Chowan at the 4:28 mark.
Chowan looks to recover on Wednesday, April 1
st when the Hawks take on Wingate University. First draw is slated for 4:00pm.
