Box Score 2 WILSON, NC- The Chowan University softball team split a pair of nonconference games on Wednesday afternoon against Barton College. The Lady Bulldogs clipped the Hawks 5-4 in nine innings in the opening contest while Chowan recovered to take game two 1-0 . Chowan moves to 12-8 on the season while Barton posts a 7-17 record after Wednesday's contests.
A Hawk error in the bottom of the first gave Barton an early lead in the opening game. A triple by Megan Kelly in the bottom of the fifth led to an additional run for the Lady Bulldogs. Chowan battled back to score two runs in the top of the seventh using
Kris Neal's RBI triple and a single to left center by
Audrey Hubbard.
Alora Lincoln held Barton scoreless in the bottom half of the frame forcing the game into extra innings.
The Hawks plated two runs in the top of the eighth with
Chandler Bridges' two-run double but Barton answered back in their half of the frame with RBI singles by Liz White and Donna Nimmo. Chowan was unable to push a run across in the top of the ninth. Kelly's RBI double in the bottom of the ninth secured the walk-off win for the Lady Bulldogs.
Lincoln went the distance on the mound for the Hawks in game one. She scattered 14 hits and five runs (three earned) over nine innings of work. White earned the win for Barton. She collected 13 strikeouts for the Lady Bulldogs and held the Hawks to seven hits over the course of the contest.
Offensively, Bridges led the effort for the Chowan Blue and White with two hits and two RBI.
Brook Bowen notched two hits in the setback. Kelly and Rachel Jordan each had three hits for Barton followed by Samantha Bass and Nimmo who tallied two hits apiece.
After a strong offensive showing from both teams in game one, the second game proved to be a change of pace. Barton and Chowan combined for five total hits in the nightcap.
Danielle Baccus provided all of the offensive the Hawks would need to secure the win with a solo homerun to left field in the top of the first inning.
Kayla Robins kept Barton off the scoreboard over seven innings of work and held the Lady Bulldogs to three hits while striking out four batters.
Jordan notched two hits for Barton in the setback with Kaitlin Staley adding a base hit knock in the loss. Ashlyn Reagan took the loss on the mound for the Lady Bulldogs after surrendering one run off of two hits.
Chowan returns to the friendly confines of Hawks Field on Saturday afternoon when they host Elizabeth City State University in CIAA Northern Division play. First pitch is slated for 12:00pm. Saturday will serve as Alumni Day for the program.
