Hawks Conclude CIAA Round-Up with Sweep of Southern Division Opponents

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 CARY, NC- The Chowan University softball team concluded CIAA crossover play on Sunday afternoon at the CIAA Round-Up.  Chowan earned a 14-2 win over Fayetteville State University in their first game of the day, topped Winston-Salem State University 8-2 and hung on for a 10-9 win over Shaw University resulting in a 3-0 record on the final day of play.  The Hawks improve to 11-7 overall and post a 6-0 record in league play with the victories. 

Seven Hawks recorded hits in Chowan's first game of the day against Fayetteville State.  Danielle Baccus, Chandler Bridges, Kris Neal and Tina White each tallied two hits apiece while Brook Bowen, Katlyn Brummett and Courtney Diamond each tallied base hit knocks. 

White led off the contest with a solo homerun to left center in the in top of the first.  The Hawks capitalized on five hits and one Lady Bronco error in the top of the third to score six runs, resulting in a 7-0 advantage.  Fayetteville State used an infield single and fielder's choice to plate two runs in the bottom of the fourth, but one run in the fifth by the Hawks followed by six additional runs in the sixth confirmed the 14-2 victory for Chowan. 

Alora Lincoln tossed six innings in the victory.  She scattered eight hits and held the Lady Broncos to two earned runs in the contest.  Shi-Cara Goins and Zoe Howard both tallied two hits apiece for Fayetteville State.  Carley Green took the loss on the mound for the Lady Broncos. 

The Hawks continued the momentum in game two with an 8-2 win over Winston-Salem State.  The Hawks plated three runs in the bottom of the first inning using RBI doubles by Diamond and Neal.  A bases-loaded walk in the top of the third allowed the Lady Rams to score but Chowan answered back with four runs in the bottom of the frame.  A  bases-loaded walk, two-run single by Rachel Clark and RBI single by White contributed to the 7-1 lead.  Baccus' solo homerun in the sixth pushed the Hawks ahead 8-1.  The Lady Rams scored an additional run in the top of the seventh with an RBI single but Chowan walked away with the 8-2 victory. 

Kayla Robins threw all seven innings in the win.  She scattered eight hits and allowed two runs (one earned) while striking out four batters.  Mercedes Hargett suffered the loss for Winston-Salem State while Chyna Riley tossed five innings in-relief.    Clark led the effort for the Hawks offensively with three hits and two RBI while Riley tallied three hits for the Lady Rams.

Chowan battled through the third and final contest of the day to secure a 10-9 victory against Shaw.  The Lady Bears held a narrow 2-1 lead after three innings of play before a two-run homerun, Hawk error and sacrifice fly pushed Shaw ahead 6-1 in the top of the fourth.  Chowan's offense came alive in the bottom of the frame when Neal's three-run homerun and White's two-run blast knotted the score 6-6. 

The Lady Bears plated three runs in the top of the fifth with Morgan Jones' RBI single and Rene Holme's two-run double.  Down but not out the Hawks took advantage of four hits and three errors by Shaw to score four runs in the top of the seventh.  Lincoln shut the Lady Bears down in the bottom of the seventh to secure the win for Chowan. 

Diamond tallied three hits in the final game of the day while Baccus, Brummett and White each notched two hits for the Chowan Blue and White.  Holmes led the effort for Shaw with two hits and three RBIs. 

Lincoln earned the win on the mound for the Hawks.  She entered the contest in-relief of Courtney Groce and Robins and held the Lady Bears scoreless in 2.1 innings of work. 

Chowan returns to action on March 25th when the Hawks travel to Barton for a nonconference doubleheader.  First pitch is slated for 2:00pm.
