Box Score 2 PEMBROKE, NC- The Chowan University softball team dropped a pair of games to UNC Pembroke on Wednesday afternoon. The Hawks fell to the Braves 2-1 in eight innings in the first game and dropped an 8-5 decision in the nightcap. Chowan slides to 5-7 on the season while UNC Pembroke advances to 14-7 on the season.
In the opening contest, a Braves' fielding error in the top of the second gave the Hawks an early 1-0 advantage. Behind
Alora Lincoln's pitching, Chowan kept UNC Pembroke off the scoreboard until the bottom of the seventh when a Hawk error put the Braves in scoring position. Jamie Johnson's RBI single to left field knotted the contest. Lincoln forced Megan Hillard into a double-play to end the Braves' scoring threat.
The Hawks were unable to score in the top of the eighth. With one out and Hillard at third base, Toni Nelson's RBI single gave the Braves all they would need to clinch the 2-1 win in the opening contest.
Lincoln threw 7.1 innings in the loss. She scattered eight hits over the course of the contest while striking out four UNC Pembroke batters.
Katie Saunders earned the win for the Braves. She tossed all eight innings in the victory and surrendered one unearned run off of seven hits.
Danielle Baccus and
Chandler Bridges combined for four of the Hawks' seven base hit knocks in the contest. Johnson led the effort for the Braves with three hits followed by Nelson with two hits and one RBI.
In game two, Chowan opened the contest with a run off of
Courtney Diamond's single to left field. Brea Hartley's three-run homer in the bottom half of the frame restored the momentum in favor of the Braves. The Hawks answered back with one run in the top of the second using
Tina White's single and plated two additional runs in the fourth with a groundout to second by
Jordan Burland-Card and White's infield single.
UNC Pembroke answered with two runs in the bottom of the frame to take a 5-4 lead. The Hawks knotted the score with Katelyn Brummett's single up the middle in the top of the fifth but a three-run homer by Hartley for the Braves pushed UNC Pembroke ahead 8-5 and confirmed the victory.
Brummett, Cragan and White each had two hits for the Hawks in the loss. Hartley led the offensive effort for the Braves with two hits and six RBI.
Courtney Groce took the loss on the mound. She threw 4.1 innings in the setback and surrendered seven earned runs on four hits. Lincoln entered the game in –relief of Groce and tossed 1.2 innings in the contest.
Dakota Leviner earned the win for UNC Pembroke. She scattered 10 hits while striking out four batters.
Chowan's weekend tournament in Salem, Virginia has been cancelled due to inclement weather.
