Hawks Win CIAA Southern Tournament

Jordan Francis carded a 73 for the Hawks on Tuesday.
CHARLOTTE, NC- The Chowan University men's golf team captured first place honors at the CIAA Southern Division Tournament on Tuesday afternoon.  The Hawks' victory was Chowan's second conference-affiliated tournament win in program history (CIAA Northern, 4/7/2013).  Chowan posted a team score of 320 on the second day of play which contributed to a two-round team score of 642.

Livingstone finished six strokes behind Chowan with a two-day total of 648, earning second place honors in the eight team field.  Fayetteville State finished in third place (654) followed by Johnson C. Smith (700) and Elizabeth City State (704) in fourth and fifth place, respectively.  Virginia State turned in a team score of 784, good for sixth place, while Virginia Union posted a team score of 791, finishing in seventh place.  Saint Augustine's rounded out the scoring in the eight team field with a two-day team score of 986.

Brandon Jobe of Fayetteville State claimed individual medalist honors after shooting an even-par 72 on the final day of play.  Jordan Francis finished in third place in the 40-player field.  He shaved seven strokes off his first day score of 80 by carding a 73 in the final day of play.  Billy Britton followed close behind in fourth place.  He shot a 78 on Monday and posted a score of 76 on Tuesday. 

After carding a season-best on Monday (78), Ryan Baker shot an 88 in the second round, resulting in a tie for 14th place in the individual standings.  Rich Edwards rounded out the scoring for the Hawks.  He carded an 86 on Monday and followed up with a score of 85 in the final round.  Edwards finished the tournament in 16th place overall.   

Sean Wilson and Darren Peoples also competed in the CIAA Southern Division Tournament.  Wilson carded an 87 in the opening round and an 86 in the final day of play.  Peoples shaved three strokes off his first day score (90) and shot an 87 on Tuesday. 

Francis and Britton both earned All-Tournament Team recognition as a result of their efforts on the course. 

The Hawks return to action on March 12th when they compete in the St. James Plantation Invitational.
