Box Score ELIZABETH CITY, NC- The Chowan University women's basketball team fell to 11-11 on the season and 7-5 in league play after a 72-60 CIAA Northern Division loss against crosstown rival Elizabeth City State University on Saturday afternoon. The Lady Vikings improve to 8-13 overall and 3-9 in the league with the victory.
Alisha Mobley led the Hawks with 18 points in the setback while
Rachel Gostomski chipped in 15 points for the Blue and White.
Summer Curtis grabbed a team-high nine rebounds for Chowan.
Elizabeth City State's Jadda Jefferies led all players in the game with 24 points. Breona Jones added 18 points for the Lady Vikings.
The Lady Vikings scored first in the contest with a layup by Breona Jones. A made free throw along with a three-pointer by Jefferies pushed Elizabeth City State's lead to 6-0 before Mobley's bucket put the Hawks on the board.
Chowan fought back to tie the score 8-8 using Mobley's three-pointer with 12:55 left in the first half. A layup by
Dhyamond Crenshaw followed by a three-pointer by Gostomski pushed the Hawks ahead 13-8 at the 9:28 mark. The five point lead would be the largest of the half for the Blue and White as Elizabeth City State fought back to pull within one point (15-14) using Jasmine Nixon's basket with 6:33 remaining before halftime.
With the score tied 22-22 and 2:32 on the clock, two made free throws pushed the Lady Vikings ahead and gave Elizabeth City State the momentum they needed to take a 30-25 lead heading into halftime.
Jefferies' three-pointer and Jones' jumper gave Elizabeth City a 10 point lead (35-25) after halftime. The Hawks cut the deficit to four points (36-32) with 16:08 left in the game using Curtis' layup. Though the Hawks trailed, Chowan remained close on the Lady Vikings' heels until midway through the second half.
With the Lady Vikings leading 42-41, an 8-0 run by Elizabeth City State left the Hawks trailing 50-41 by the 9:19 mark.
A three-pointer by Mikalia Frazier with 6:58 left to play handed the Lady Vikings a 55-43 advantage. From there, it was all about Elizabeth City State as the Hawks trailed by double digit points for the remainder of the contest.
Chowan looks to recover from the 72-60 setback on February 11
th when the Hawks host Virginia State University. Tip-off for the CIAA Northern Division contest is slated for 5:30pm. The game will also be Chowan University's 7
th Annual Play4Kay cancer awareness game.
