Box Score ELIZABETH CITY, NC- The Chowan University men's basketball team earned a 71-58 win over Elizabeth City State University on Saturday evening. The Hawks improve to 12-10 overall with the win and 6-6 in the CIAA while Elizabeth City State slips to 9-16 on the season and 2-10 in league play. With the victory, Chowan earned their first-ever sweep over Elizabeth City State.
Kyree Bethel led all players in the contest with a career-high 32 points and eight three-pointers.
Mark Anthony Buright chipped in 15 points while
Carlos Arroyo added nine points and eight rebounds.
Darrell Ward led the effort for the Vikings with 17 points followed by Jermaine Brown with 10 points.
Chowan grabbed the lead right from the start as Bethel drained a three-pointer on the Hawks' first possession. The Hawks quickly built their lead to 11-2 with 16:14 on the clock in the first half. An 8-0 run by the Vikings put Elizabeth City State back within striking distance but Chowan never surrendered the lead.
With 7:06 remaining before halftime,
Josh Mellette's basket gave the Hawks a 26-16 edge. Chowan led by as many as 17 points (38-21) as late as the 4:08 mark before heading into halftime with a 39-30 advantage.
Bethel started off the second half with a three-pointer to give Chowan a commanding 42-30 advantage. The Hawks maintained a lead of 10 points or more for the remainder of the second half before securing the 71-58 victory.
Chowan returns to action on February 11
th. The Hawks host Virginia State University in the Helms Center. Tip-off is slated for 7:30pm.
