Box Score MURFREESBORO- The Chowan University women's basketball team suffered an 81-75 setback to Virginia Union University in their home regular season finale on Saturday afternoon. The Hawks end the regular season 13-13 overall, 9-7 in league play and 5-5 in the divisional race. The Lady Panthers wrap up the regular season with an 8-17 overall record, 4-12 mark in CIAA play and 3-7 record against Northern Division opponents.
Ashle Freeman led all players in the game with 24 points for Virginia Union. Trylanda Jennings and Lady Walker each tallied 14 points for the Lady Panthers while Jasmine Dancy and Taylor White added 13 and 10 points, respectively. Walker grabbed a staggering 20 rebounds in the win (seven offensive, 13 defensive). Virginia Union shot 42.1% from the floor while holding Chowan to a 39.4 shooting percentage over the course of the competition.
Naima Harrington led the Hawks with a career-best 21 points in the setback.
Chantel Roberts chipped in 17 points, including five three-pointers while
Alisha Mobley added 10 points for the Blue and White. Seniors

A slow start by the Hawks left Chowan trailing 22-7 by the midway point of the first half. Two made free throws by Virginia Union with 7:41 on the clock handed the Hawks their largest deficit of the half (18 points) and gave the Lady Panthers a 26-8 advantage. Virginia Union took a 37-20 lead heading into the locker room at halftime.
Trailing 40-20 less than one minute into the second half, a layup by
Alisha Mobley led to a 14-4 run for the Blue and White and cut the deficit to 10 points (44-34) after Roberts' three-pointer at the 15:58 mark. Another three-pointer by Roberts with 11:28 on the clock brought the Hawks within eight points (51-43).
The Hawks pulled within four points (57-53) using a layup by
Dhyamond Crenshaw at the 6:39 mark but were unable to swing the momentum back in their favor and suffered the 81-75 setback. Chowan heads to the CIAA Tournament next week in Charlotte, North Carolina. Bracket information will be released as it becomes available.
