Box Score LINCOLN, PA- The Chowan University men's basketball team fell short in a 61-58 decision against The Lincoln University on Wednesday evening. The Hawks drop to 13-12 on the season, 7-8 in CIAA play and 4-5 in the Northern Division after the setback. The Lions improve to 16-9 overall, 10-5 in the league and 5-4 in divisional play with the win.
Kyree Bethel led the effort for the Hawks with 16 points in the loss while
Josh Mellette added 11 points.
Trevis Buckhanon grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds (four offensive, seven defensive) and scored nine points in the setback.
Kyle Aiken led all players in the game with 18 points. Tony Efese added 13 points for Lincoln.
Efese started the contest off with a layup for the Lions. Buckhanon's jumper on the Hawks' next possession tied the score. Neither team was able to pull away for a commanding lead in the first half but the Hawks overcame 11 lead changes and five ties to hold a 30-28 edge heading into halftime.
Four minutes into the second half, with the Hawks trailing 36-32, a three pointer by Bethel sparked a 14-0 run for the Blue and White and left the Lions trailing 46-36 with 9:48 on the clock. Mellette's jumper with 5:53 left in the game put the Hawks ahead 50-38, giving Chowan their largest lead of the contest.
Lincoln cut the deficit to a mere two points (58-56) with 15 seconds left in the game. Efese's three-pointer gave the lead to the Lions. A Chowan turnover and foul allowed Aiken to capitalize on two free throw opportunities, securing the 61-58 win for Lincoln.
The Hawks look to recover on Saturday when they host Virginia Union University. Tip-off for Chowan's Lights Out television game is slated for 4:05pm in the Helms Center.
