Hawks Earn Historic Win over Lady Trojans

Box Score MURFREESBORO- The Chowan University women's basketball team toppled the Virginia State University Lady Trojans 68-48 on Wednesday evening in CIAA Northern Division play.  The Hawks improve to 12-11 on the season and 8-5 in the league while the Lady Trojans move to 14-8 on the year and 6-6 against CIAA competition. Wednesday's win was the Hawks' first victory over Virginia State in women's basketball program history. 

Rachel Gostomski scored 17 points for the Blue and White while Alisha Mobley added 16 points in the victory. Dhyamond Crenshaw and Jordan Payne each tallied six rebounds for the Hawks. 

Chowan's bench players accounted for 33 of the Hawks' 68 points.  The Hawks shot 54% from the floor on Wednesday evening. 

Virginia State was held to 35% field goal percentage over the course of the evening.  Tiffanie Adair led the effort for the Lady Trojans with 17 points and five rebounds in the loss. 

Dashae Jones opened the contest with a three-pointer for Virginia State.  Two made free throws by Mobley put the Hawks on the board and Mobley's basket at the 17:46 mark put the Hawks ahead 4-3 early in the contest.  Chowan overcame a tied score seven times in the first half before jumping to a 31-22 lead with 1:21 remaining before halftime.  The Hawks' 9-0 run beginning at the 5:43 mark led to the advantage and contributed to Chowan's 31-25 lead heading into halftime. 

The Lady Trojans pulled within four points (31-27) at the start of the second half but Chowan refused to surrender the momentum, or the lead. The Hawks held a 43-38 advantage with 9:09 left in the game when Crenshaw's layup sparked a 6-0 run resulting in an 11 point lead (49-38) with 7:48 on the clock. 
Gostomski's layup with 3:02 left in the game pushed Chowan ahead 54-44.  The Hawks maintained a double digit advantage for the remainder of the contest before securing the 68-48 win.

Chowan returns to action on Saturday when the Hawks take on Bowie State University in CIAA Northern Division play.  Tip-off against the Lady Bulldogs is slated for 2:00pm.
