Box Score FAYETTEVILLE, NC- The Chowan University men's basketball team opened CIAA play with an 80-76 win over Fayetteville State University on Tuesday evening. The Hawks improve to 7-3 on the year with a 1-0 record in CIAA play while the Broncos slip to 5-5- overall and 0-1 in the league. Tuesday's win was the Hawks' second victory in as many outings.
Chowan had five players score double-digit points in the win, led by
Jeremy Smith with 21 points. Smith also grabbed a team-high seven rebounds (seven defensive).
Andrew Lopez followed with a career-high 16 points while
Carlos Arroyo and
Marco Haskins added 14 points and 13 points, respectively.
Kortez Smith chipped in 11 points for the Hawks in the victory.
Michael Tyson led all players in the game with 22 points for Fayetteville State. Joshua Dawson added 15 points followed by Isiah Vinson with 10 points. William Tibbs grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds (four offensive, six defensive) in the setback.
Lopez opened the contest with a three-pointer for the Hawks, sparking a 10-0 run for Chowan at the start of the first half. The Hawks maintained the lead for the entire first half, and extended their lead to as many as 16 points (37-21) using
Jeremy Smith's layup at the 4:59 mark. Arroyo's layup with 15 seconds on the clock allowed the Hawks to take a 41-27 lead heading into halftime.
With Chowan leading 63-47 and 10:58 left in the game, a bucket by Tyson led to a 10-0 run for the Broncos. Fayetteville State remained within striking distance down the final stretch of the second half, cutting the deficit to three points (77-74) with just under 36 seconds left to play. Both teams exchanged free throws in the final seconds of the contest with
Jeremy Smith's free throw securing the 80-76 win for Chowan.
The Hawks return to action on December 19
th in a CIAA crossover contest against Saint Augustine's University. Tip-off is slated for 4:00pm.
