Box Score MURFREESBORO- The Chowan University men's basketball team fell to The Lincoln University Lions in the final seconds of the CIAA Northern Division match-up on Wednesday evening. The 63-61 loss drops the Hawks to 10-9 on the season and 4-6 in the league while the Lions improve to 13-7 overall and 7-3 against CIAA competition.
Kyree Bethel led all players in the contest with 21 points and connected on 5-7 three-pointers.
Tiron Brown chipped in 14 points for the Blue and White followed by
Warren Powers with 11 points.
Jalen Marshall grabbed a team-high eight rebounds in the loss (five offensive, three defensive).
Alonzo Murphy paced the Lions with 15 points and 10 rebounds (four offensive, six defensive). Joshua Davis and Kyle Aiken added 12 and 10 points respectively.
Lincoln jumped out to a quick 7-0 lead to start the contest. The Lions held on the momentum of the game until the 7:15 mark in the first half when Powers' layup tied the score 21-21 and capped a 5-0 run for the Blue and White. Brown's jumper on the next possession gave Chowan their first lead of the contest. The teams exchanged baskets through the remainder of the first half with
Josh Mellette's bucket at the buzzer sending the Hawks and Lions into halftime with a 33-33 score.
Bethel opened the second half with a three-pointer for the Hawks which contributed to a 39-33 advantage for Chowan. The Lions battled back to knot the score 46-46 with a bucket by Davis with 7:51 left in the game. The remainder of the second half featured three ties and three lead changes with Lincoln ending the contest with the final word.
With Chowan ahead 60-57 and 2:45 on the clock, the Lions pulled ahead using two made throws and a layup. Brown's made free throw for Chowan iced the scored once more (61-61) with 17 seconds left in the game. After a quick timeout by Lincoln, Aiken sealed the deal for the Lions with a jumper as time expired to hand the Hawks the 63-61 setback.
Chowan looks to recover on Saturday as they travel to Virginia Union University for a CIAA Northern Division contest. Tip-off is slated for 4:00pm.
