Box Score MURFREESBORO- The Chowan University men's basketball team came up short in a 58-57 decision to Bowie State University on Saturday evening. The Hawks move to 10-8 overall with the setback and 4-5 in CIAA play while the Bulldogs improve to 16-5 on the season and 8-1 in league play.
Chowan had three players score double-digit points in the loss.
Josh Mellette led all players in the contest with 14 points and five blocks while
Mark Anthony Buright and
Warren Powers followed with 12 points and 11 points, respectively. The Hawks shot 45.5% from the floor and held Bowie State to a 30.2% shooting percentage but still came up short of the win.
Justin Beck led the way for Bowie State with 12 points followed by Julian Livingston with 11 points, including the game-winning three-pointer. The Bulldogs shot 7-23 from three-point range but hit a trio of three-pointers within the last five minutes of the contest to earn the victory on the Hawks' home court.
Powers opened the contest with a basket for the Hawks which led to an 8-0 run for the Blue and White. Bowie State battled back to pull within two points at the 13:57 mark before a three-pointer by Dayshawn Wells handed the Bulldogs their first lead of the contest. The first half featured six lead changes before the Hawks came out on top with a 23-20 lead heading into halftime.
Chowan held on to the momentum through the majority of the second half. The Hawks maintained the lead on all but one occasion and overcame four tied scores until the final minutes of the contest.
Chowan led by as many as seven points with 5:45 on the clock and maintained a six point lead (50-44) with 4:55 remaining in the contest. A three-pointer by Cameron Knox at the 2:10 mark capped a 9-2 run for the Bulldogs and gave Bowie State a 53-52 lead. Chowan answered with a 5-0 run of their own for a 57-53 advantage with 14 seconds left in the game.
Two made free throws by Zafir Williams for the Bulldogs made it a two-point game. After a 30-second time out by the Bulldogs, a jump ball call restored possession to Bowie State. Following another quick time out by Bowie State, Livingston drilled a three-pointer as time expired to give the Bulldogs the 58-57 win.
Chowan looks to recover on Wednesday. The Hawks host The Lincoln University in a CIAA Northern Division match-up. Tip-off is slated for 7:30pm in the Helms Center.
