Box Score PETERSBURG, VA--- The Chowan University men's basketball team suffered an 88-70 setback on Wednesday evening against Virginia State University in CIAA Northern Division play. The Hawks slip to 10-7 on the season with the setback while the Trojans improve to 12-5 overall and 5-2 in league play.
Kyree Bethel led all players in the contest with 22 points for the Hawks.
Mark Anthony Buright followed with 18 points while
Dauson Womack grabbed a team-high seven rebounds (two offensive, five defensive).
Elijah Moore paced the Trojans with 17 points in the win. Tyrece Little chipped in 14 points and 11 rebounds (three offensive, eight defensive) and Tyler Peterson added 11 points in the victory.
Josh Mellette started the contest off with a layup for the Blue and White. Alphonso Leary responded with a bucket for Virginia State to knot the score. With the score tied 4-4 early in the contest, Leary sunk two free throws to hand the Trojans the lead. Virginia State led by as many as 14 points (36-22) before heading into halftime with a 44-33 advantage.
The Hawks were unable to recover from the first half deficit. They pulled within 12 points with 2:50 left in the game after a made free throw by Bethel, but ultimately suffered the 88-70 setback.
Chowan returns to action on Saturday when the Hawks host Bowie State University. Tip-off is slated for 4:00pm in the Helms Center.
