Box Score MURFREESBORO- The Chowan University women's basketball team dropped a 62-60 decision to Elizabeth City State University on Saturday afternoon. The Hawks move to 8-9 overall with the loss and 4-3 in CIAA play while the Lady Vikings improve to 7-9 on the season and 2-5 in league play.
Jada Jefferies led all players in the game with 30 points in the win for Elizabeth City State. Ashley Hughes chipped in 11 points while hauling in 12 rebounds (four offensive, eight defensive).
Alisha Mobley paced the Hawks with 17 points in the setback and eight rebounds (three offensive, five defensive).
Rachel Gostomski followed with 10 points while
Naima Harrington added eight points and eight rebounds (three offensive, five defensive).
Mobley started off the contest with a layup for the Hawks. Jasmine Boyd answered two baskets followed by a three-pointer by Breona Jones to give the Lady Vikings an early 7-2 advantage. The Hawks stayed close on the Lady Vikings' heels but Elizabeth City State maintained the lead for the remainder of the half, leaving Chowan trailing 29-23 at halftime.
Both teams exchanged baskets early in the second half before Mobley's layup at the 13:00 mark tied the score 40-40. The Hawks overcame two ties from that point forward to orchestrate a 13-4 run resulting in a 53-44 lead with just 5:17 left in the game. Elizabeth City State refused to go away quietly and responded with a 12-3 run capped by Jefferies' three-pointer to knot the score once more (56-56).
With the score tied 60-60, Jefferies confirmed the victory for the Lady Vikings with a layup with seven seconds on the clock.
The Hawks return to action on January 21
st when they travel to Petersburg, Virginia to take on Virginia State University.
