Box Score WINSTON-SALEM, NC- The Chowan University men's basketball team earned a 71-67 win over Winston-Salem State University on Saturday afternoon.  The Hawks improve to 9-5 overall and 3-2 against CIAA competition with the victory while the Rams move to 8-5 on the season and 1-3 in league play.  Chowan's win over Winston-Salem State was the Hawks' first in men's basketball program history.

Mark Anthony Buright led all players in the contest with 22 points in the victory.  Hank Edmonds added 10 points for the Blue and White while Kyree Bethel and Josh Mellette added nine points apiece.  Warren Powers hauled in a team-high 10 rebounds (three offensive, seven defensive).

Donta Harper led the effort for the Rams with 18 points.  Marquez Jones and WyKevin Bazemore chipped in 13 and 10 points, respectively.

Mellette started off the contest with a basket for Chowan.  The Hawks, though maintaining a narrow lead, kept a firm grip on the advantage until the 11:52 mark when Harper's free throws gave the Rams their first lead of the contest (18-17).  Chowan fought back to knot the score using Buright's three-pointer at the 6:46.  The score was tied five times from that point forward until Harper's jumper just before halftime left the Hawks trailing 36-34 at the end of the first half.

Chowan overcame five ties in the second half before Bethel's three-pointer with 12:26 left to play gave the Hawks a 50-47 lead and contributed to a 12-3 run for the Blue and White. The Rams clawed their way back from the deficit and used Terrell Leach's three-pointer with 3:58 left in the game to regain the lead (62-59). With the score tied 64-64 and 1:35 remaining in the contest, Bethel's three-pointer pushed the Hawks ahead once more and Chowan closed out the contest with the 71-67 victory.

Chowan returns to action on Monday when they travel to Livingstone College.  The CIAA crossover match-up is slated to tip-off at 7:30pm.
