Hawks Take Two against Virginia Union on Senior Day

Box Score MURFREESBORO, NC- The Chowan University softball team swept Virginia Union 14-2 and 12-1 on Sunday afternoon in CIAA Northern Division play.   The victories move the Hawks to 13-27 overall and 11-3 in the league while the Lady Panthers move to 7-11 on the year and 6-7 in the CIAA.  Sunday was Senior Day for the Hawks.  Courtney Baker, Kayla Brady, Liz Hipple and Erica Wagnon were honored in-between games.  Chowan improves to 13-27 overall and 11-3 in the CIAA while Virginia Union slips to 7-11 on the season and 6-7 in league play. 
 
Virginia Union plated one run in the top of the first inning using an RBI single to right.  Courtney Baker's two-run double up the middle gave the Hawks a 2-1 lead in their half of the frame.  Shermanda Fambro's single down the left field line for Virginia Union knotted the score 2-2.  The Hawks responded with three runs in the bottom of the inning using RBI's from Jack Byrd, Courtney Diamond and Jordan Burland-Card to extend Chowan's advantage to 5-2. 
 
In the bottom of the fourth, Baker's hit to left allowed Hipple to score and a Virginia Union error allowed the Hawks to pull away 7-2.  In the same frame, Burland-Card drew a bases-loaded walk and Erica Wagnon followed with a two-run single to left to leave the Lady Panthers trailing 10-2.   Hipple's three-run double followed by Baker's base hit put the Hawks ahead 14-2.
 
The Panthers were unable to recover and suffered the 14-2 setback.  Baker tallied three hits and four RBI in the win while Hipple had three hits and knocked in three RBI.  Alora Lincoln earned the win for the Hawks on the mound.  She scattered six hits through five innings of work. 
 
The Lady Panthers scored in the top of the first inning of the second game using a sacrifice fly to center field.  White's base hit up the middle in the home half of the inning tied the score 1-1.  Baker led off the bottom of the third inning with a solo homerun well over the left field fence to give the Hawks a 2-1 lead.  Chowan tacked on two additional runs in the frame using a Lady Panther error and infield single to build a 4-1 advantage. 
 
The Hawks scored eight runs in the bottom of the fourth using a two-run error by Virginia Union and RBI's from Courtney Diamond, Leighanne Huggins, Lindsay Hewitt,  Hipple and Baker.  Leading 12-1 in the top of the fifth, Courtney Groce retired the side in order to confirm the victory for the Hawks. 
 
Groce threw five innings in the win and surrendered just one hit while striking out seven batters.  Baker paced the Hawks with two hits while Diamond, Groce, Hewitt, Huggins and White tallied one base hit knock apiece. 
 
Chowan returns to action on April 12th when they travel to Elizabeth City State for a CIAA Northern Division match-up.
