Hawks Earn Split against Barton

Alora Lincoln held Barton to three hits in the Hawks' 6-2 win over the Lady Bulldogs.
Box Score MURFREESBORO, NC- The Chowan University softball team split a pair of nonconference games against Barton College on Thursday afternoon.  The Hawks fell to the Lady Bulldogs 6-2 in the first game before capturing the second game 6-2.  Chowan improves to 11-25 on the season while Barton evens their record 14-14. 
 
Amber Weaver led off the top of the second inning with a homerun to left field to give the Lady Bulldogs a 1-0 advantage.  Weaver came through for the Lady Bulldogs again in the third with an RBI single to center.  Leighanne Huggins knotted the game for the Hawks in the bottom of the fourth with a two-run double to left center. 
 
Barton responded with two runs in the top of the sixth to pull away 4-2.  Weaver's RBI single through the left side gave the Lady Bulldogs an additional score in the top of the seventh and Crystal Britton's triple down the right field line solidified a 6-2 lead.  The Hawks were unable to score in their half of the frame resulting in the 6-2 loss for Chowan.
 
Courtney Groce took the setback on the mound.  She threw all seven innings while giving up 10 hits and six earned runs.  Ashley Reagan picked up the win for Barton and held the Hawks to four hits in seven innings of work. 
 
Chandler Bridges accounted for two hits in the first game while Jack Byrd and Leighanne Huggins tallied one apiece.  Huggins had both RBI for Chowan. 
 
Barton opened up the nightcap with a run in the top of the first.  The Hawks battled back in their half of the frame with three runs using Courtney Baker's RBI double, Brook Bowen's sacrifice fly and a Lady Bulldog fielding error. 
 
Tina White's single up the middle plated an additional run for the Hawks in the bottom of the second and left the Lady Bulldogs trailing 4-1. A wild pitch led to a run for Barton in the top of the third but Bridges' two-run triple down the left field line put the Hawks up 6-2 in the bottom of the fifth.  The Hawks held the Lady Bulldogs at-bay for the remainder of the contest to secure the win. 
 
The Hawks combined for 10 hits in the second game against the Lady Bulldogs.  Baker, Byrd and White each had two hits for the Hawks while Bridges knocked in two RBI. 
 
Alora Lincoln held the Lady Bulldogs to just three hits en-route to earning the win on the mound. 
 
The Hawks return to CIAA play this weekend.  They travel to Petersburg, VA on Saturday for a Northern Division match-up against Virginia State University before returning home on Sunday to host Virginia Union.
