Box Score PETERSBURG, VA- The Chowan University softball team captured a 15-3 win over Fayetteville State University on Friday morning. The Hawks advance to take on Virginia Union University at the Petersburg Sports Complex and will fight to stay alive in the loser's bracket.
The Hawks struck in their first at bat and plated a run off of
Courtney Baker's RBI double deep to center field.
Leighanne Huggins laced a two-run double down the left field line and
Liz Hipple followed shortly after with a two-run single to give the Hawks a 5-0 lead.
Tori Cragan's RBI and a wild pitch led to two more runs for Chowan and left Fayetteville State trailing 7-0 after one inning complete.
The Lady Broncos scored three runs in the top of the third using Brittany Freeman's RBI single and Alex Wickham's two-run double. Cragan's three-run double and a passed ball led to four more runs for Chowan in the third. The Hawks scored four runs off four hits in the bottom of the fourth before securing the 15-3 victory.
Cragan, Hipple, and Liz White each had three hits for the Hawks. Cragan tallied six RBI's for the Blue and White.
Courtney Groce earned the win on the mound for Chowan. She held the Lady Broncos to five hits over the course of five innings while striking out four batters.
