Box Score NEWPORT NEWS, VA- The Chowan University softball team dropped a pair of nonconference games on Sunday afternoon against Christopher Newport. The Hawks fell to the Captains 11-3 in the first game before suffering a 12-4 setback in the nightcap. Chowan slips to 15-29 on the season with the losses while Christopher Newport improves to 32-6. The Captains are currently ranked #14 in the NCAA Division III standings.
The Hawks struck early in the first game and took a 1-0 lead in the top of the first after
Tori Cragan scored on a wild pitch. An RBI triple, groundout and solo homerun gave the Captains three runs in their half of the frame. Cragan was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded in the top of the second to give the Hawks an additional run but Christopher Newport was quick to answer with two runs off three hits and an error in the second to pull away 5-2.
Kayla Brady's groundout to second in the top of the third allowed
Erica Wagnon to score. The Captains took over from there. They scored two runs in the third and four in the fourth thanks to three homeruns in the frame en-route to securing the 11-3 victory.
Demi Reynolds took the loss on the mound for the Hawks. She surrendered 11 runs (seven earned) and 13 hits in four innings of work.

Jack Byrd and Cragan each had base hits for the Chowan in the loss.
Tina White gave the Hawks some momentum at the start of the second game with a triple and Baker knocked her in with a homerun to left field, giving the Hawks an early 2-0 lead. The Captains responded with two RBI singles in the bottom of the inning to tie the score.
Christopher Newport capitalized on a seven-run second inning to pull away 9-2. Chowan tacked on two runs in the fourth using
Jordan Burland-Card's two-run single to center. The Captains used a sacrifice fly, and two RBI singles in the fifth to secure the 12-4 victory.
Alora Lincoln suffered the setback on the mound for the Hawks.
Lindsay Hewitt tossed 1.1 innings in-relief of Lincoln. Baker, Burland-Card,
Liz Hipple and White each had hits for the Blue and White in the loss.
Christopher Newport held the Hawks to nine hits while pounding out 28 of their own over the course of the two games.
Chowan heads to Petersburg, VA this week to defend their 2013 CIAA Championship title. The tournament begins on Thursday, April 17
