Box Score ELIZABETH CITY, NC- The Chowan University softball team picked up two CIAA Northern Division wins on Saturday afternoon with 9-5 and 12-4 victories over Elizabeth City State University. The Hawks improve to 15-27 on the year and 13-3 in league play with the wins while the Lady Vikings slip to 7-19 overall and 5-11 against CIAA competition. Chowan concluded CIAA play on Saturday and finished in second place in the Northern Division.
Chowan plated four runs in their first at-bat of the first game using two hits and three Lady Viking errors. Elizabeth City State responded with four runs of their own in their half of the frame thanks to four hits and one Hawk error.
Courtney Baker's RBI double in the top of the second gave the Hawks a 5-4 advantage. The Lady Vikings knotted the score once more using Haley Williams' RBI in the bottom of the fifth. Chowan scored four runs off five hits and two Elizabeth City State errors to take a 9-5 lead in the sixth before securing the victory.
The Hawks combined for 15 hits in the first game.
Tina White led the effort with a 4-4 outing. Baker added three hits in the win while
Tori Cragan,
Liz Hipple and
Kayla Brady added two hits apiece.
Alora Lincoln earned the victory on the mound. She scattered seven hits throughout seven innings of work while striking out six batters.
Baker's double to left in the top of the first inning in the second game gave the Hawks a quick 2-0 lead. Jessica White's RBI double for Elizabeth City State in their half of the frame put the Lady Vikings on the board. Chowan capitalized on a five-run third inning using three hits and two Elizabeth City State errors to pull away 7-1. The Lady Vikings made the score 7-4 in the bottom of the third with a three-run homerun by Kambrie Robinson.
After scoring an additional run in the top of the fourth, Baker's grand slam in the fifth gave Chowan a comfortable 12-4 lead. The Hawks held the Lady Vikings scoreless in the bottom of the inning to secure the victory. Baker and White each had three hits for the Blue and White in game two. Hipple had two hits in the win while Baker tallied six RBI.
Demi Reynolds earned the win for the Hawks on the mound.
Chowan returns to action on Sunday when they travel to Christopher Newport University for a nonconference doubleheader. First pitch is slated for 1:00pm.
