Box Score PETERSBURG, VA- The Chowan University softball team picked up their first win of the season on Sunday afternoon with a 9-1 victory over St. Augustine's University. The Hawks improve to 1-15 on the year and are now 1-0 in CIAA play while the Lady Falcons move to 5-11 overall and 0-1 in the league.
After scoring in the top of the first, the Hawks plated four additional runs in the top of the second using
Liz Hipple's single, a wild pitch, an RBI from
Courtney Baker and an error to pull away 5-1.
Leigh Ward's RBI single to left in the third inning gave Chowan a 6-1 advantage.
The Lady Falcons answered in the home half of the game when Daja White's RBI single put St. Augustine's on the board.
Chandler Bridges' infield single led to another run for the Hawks in the fifth while an error by the Lady Falcons extended Chowan's lead to 8-1.
Lindsay Hewitt's RBI double in the top of the sixth solidified the 9-1 win for the Hawks.
Courtney Groce picked up the win on the mound for Chowan. She held the Lady Falcons to one run and four hits in six innings of work. Korey Hill suffered the loss for St. Augustine's.
Leigh Ward collected three hits on the afternoon while
Courtney Diamond added two of her own. Hewitt, Hipple, and Bridges each had base hits in the contest. Chowan's batters combined for eight hits and walked nine times over the course of the game.
The Hawks return to Petersburg on Monday where they will continue CIAA crossover play. Chowan takes on Fayetteville State at 11:00am and Shaw at 5:00pm.
