Box Score MOUNT OLIVE, NC- The Chowan University softball team dropped a pair of nonconference games to Mount Olive on Wednesday evening. The Hawks fell to the Trojans 12-0 in the first game before taking a 10-6 loss in the nightcap. Chowan slides to 10-22 with the setbacks while Mount Olive improves to 12-20.
After grabbing an early 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first, the Trojans plated six runs in the bottom of the second using six hits and one Hawk error to pull away 7-0. Mount Olive scored an additional run in the home half of the third thanks to an RBI single before capitalizing on a four-run fourth inning to gain a 12-0 advantage and secure the win.
Chowan was held to two hits in the first game.
Leigh Ward and
Courtney Baker each tallied base hits in the loss.
Courtney Groce suffered the loss on the mound. She surrendered 14 hits and 12 runs (three earned) in the setback. Mount Olive had four hitters tally multiple hits in the victory and took advantage of five errors en-route to the win.
The Hawks jumped out a 2-0 lead in the top of the second using
Brook Bowen's RBI double and an infield single by Groce.
Tori Cragan's RBI single in the third gave the Hawks a 3-0 lead. Mount Olive got on the board in the home half and plated four runs in the bottom of the fifth using an RBI triple three-run double to steal the momentum and pull ahead 5-3.
Chowan answered with three runs in the top of the sixth using RBI singles by
Jack Byrd and
Tina White along with a wild pitch. Mount Olive rallied to score five runs in their half of the frame with an RBI single, two-run triple, a ground out and RBI double. The Trojans retired the Hawks in order in the top of the seventh to secure the win.
Alora Lincoln took the loss on the mound. She threw 5.2 innings in the loss while surrendering 11 hits and 10 runs (10 earned). Cragan and
Kayla Brady each had two hits in the setback.
Chowan returns CIAA play on Saturday when they travel to Elizabeth City State for a doubleheader beginning at 12:00pm. The Hawks return to their home field on Sunday for a nonconference doubleheader against Barton.
