Box Score RALEIGH, NC- The Chowan University softball team concluded play on Monday afternoon at the CIAA Round-up. Sunday's suspended contest against Winston-Salem State was completed on Monday morning. The Lady Rams handed the Hawks their first CIAA loss of the season with a 9-2 setback but the Hawks recovered to defeat Livingstone 35-1. Chowan moves to 10-20 on the season overall and posts a 9-1 record in CIAA play.
Chowan and Winston-Salem State reached the bottom of the sixth inning on Sunday before weather halted play. The Lady Rams took an early 3-0 lead in the bottom of the first using an RBI single by Katrina Bartlett and two-run single by Andreya O'Brien. The Hawks answered in the top of the second with a run of their own using
Courtney Diamond's RBI double.
Winston-Salem State added three more runs in the bottom of the second before
Tori Cragan hit a ground out to second to score
Chandler Bridges in the Hawks' next at-bat, giving Chowan an additional run.
The Lady Rams used a three-run double to pull away 9-2 in the bottom of the sixth before securing the victory.
Alora Lincoln took the loss on the mound. She gave up seven runs (six earned) in 3.1 innings of work while striking out four.
Lindsay Hewitt tossed 2.2 innings in-relief of Lincoln and surrendered two runs, both earned. Bridges, Diamond,
Courtney Baker,
Liz Hipple and
Leigh Ward each tallied base hits in the loss.
Mercedes Hargett picked up the victory for Winston-Salem State. She held the Hawks to five hits while striking out nine batters.
The Hawks pounded out 30 hits in the final game of the afternoon against Livingstone.
Kayla Brady led the effort with six hits and nine RBI while 10 other Hawks collected hits in the victory (with eight garnering multiple hits).
Brady highlighted the Hawks' 12-run first inning with a three-run double. The Lady Blue Bears collected six hits in the loss, four of which came in the first inning leading to their lone run of the contest.
Brook Bowen's two-run double and Bridges' two-run triple contributed to eight more runs for the Hawks in the second inning.
Chowan plated an additional five runs in the third before capitalizing on eight hits and two Lady Blue Bear errors en-route to a 10-run fourth. Brady hit a three-run inside the park homerun in the frame to propel the Hawks to the 35-1 win.
Demi Reynolds picked up the win on the mound after holding Livingstone to one run and six hits.
Chowan returns to action on Wednesday when they travel to Mount Olive for a doubleheader against the Trojans. First pitch is slated for 4:00pm.
