Box Score MURFREESBORO, NC- The Chowan University softball team picked up two CIAA Northern Division wins on Friday afternoon. The Hawks rolled past The Lincoln University 30-0 in the first game before defeating the Lady Lions 35-0 in the nightcap. Chowan improves to 8-19 overall and 7-0 in the CIAA while Lincoln starts their season off 0-2 overall and 0-2 in league play.
The Hawks struck early and often throughout both games. In the first game, Chowan plated three runs in the home half of the first inning using a ground out by Hipple and two-run error. A 16-run second inning by the Hawks put the contest out of reach and left Lincoln trailing 19-0. With a comfortable lead in the third, two-run singles by
Lindsay Hewitt and
Jack Byrd, an RBI single by
Erica Wagnon followed by
Liz Hipple's two-run double pushed Chowan's advantage to 26-0. The Hawks tacked on four runs in the bottom of the fourth before closing out the game with the 30-0 win.
Lindsay Hewitt held the Lady Lions to one hit over the course of three innings. She collected five strikeouts en-route to the win.
Alora Lincoln closed out the final two innings of the contest and held Lincoln to one hit while striking out four Lady Lion batters.
The Hawks walked 19 times throughout the first game and collected 12 hits. Hipple paced Chowan with four hits and eight RBI. Wagnon tallied two hits of her own while six other Hawks collected base hits.
Chowan continued their offensive attack into the second game. A two-run triple by
Courtney Baker and Hipple's ground out gave the Hawks an early 3-0 lead. A ten-run second inning highlighted by
Brook Bowen's bases-loaded in-the-park homerun pushed Chowan ahead 13-0.
The Hawks tacked on seven more runs in the third before capitalizing on a 15-run fourth inning to confirm the 35-0 victory. Baker tallied six RBI's in the nightcap while Bowen and Hipple collected five apiece. Bowen and Hipple collected five and four hits in the second game respectively.
Hipple knocked in 13 RBI's over the course of both games. Baker followed with 10 RBI's throughout the doubleheader.
Demi Reynolds held the Lady Lions to one hit in the nightcap and collected seven strikeout to earn the win on the mound.
The Hawks return to action on Saturday and Sunday when they take on Johnson C. Smith, Winston-Salem State and Livingstone in CIAA crossover play.
