Hawks Take Two against Bowie State

The Hawks earned two wins of Bowie State and celebrated Faculty and Staff Appreciation Day on Thursday afternoon.
Box Score MURFREESBORO, NC- The Chowan University softball team picked up two CIAA Northern Division wins over the visiting Lady Bulldogs of Bowie State on Thursday afternoon.  The Hawks improve to 6-19 overall and remain undefeated against CIAA competition with a 5-0 record.  Bowie State slips to 1-13 overall on the year and starts off league play with a 0-2 mark.
The Hawks captured a 5-2 victory in the first game before topping the Lady Bulldogs 8-2 in the nightcap. 
 
Bowie State scored in the top of the first using an RBI single by Hailey Bethke.  The Hawks quickly plated four runs in their half of the frame using four hits and three Lady Bulldog errors. 
 
Courtney Baker's RBI double to left center in the bottom of the fourth gave the Hawks a 5-1 advantage.  The Lady Bulldogs struck again in the top of the fifth when Bethke's infield single allowed Cassandra Clayborne to score. 
 
Courtney Groce took over from there and held the Lady Bulldogs hitless for the remainder of the contest to propel the Hawks to the 5-2 victory.  She earned the win on the mound after surrendering four hits in seven innings of work while striking out 11 Bowie State batters. 
 
Baker tallied two hits in the win for Chowan. 
 
The Hawks jumped out to a 4-0 lead in game two using RBI singles by Baker, Kayla Brady, Courtney Diamond and a ground out by Brook Bowen.  A Lady Bulldog error in the bottom of the third led to another run for Chowan.  Bowen's sacrifice fly in the fourth gave the Hawks a 6-0 lead.
 
The Lady Bulldogs got on the board with two runs in the top of the fifth but Chowan scored two runs in the home half of the sixth to close out the game with the 8-2 win.  Alora Lincoln earned the win on the mound for the Hawks.  She gave up just two hits over the course of seven innings while collecting six strikeouts. 
 
Courtney Diamond tallied three hits in the nightcap while Liz Hipple notched two hits and scored three runs for the Blue and White. 
 
The Hawks take the field again on Friday when they host Lincoln University (PA) in a CIAA Northern Division match-up beginning at 2:00pm.
