Box Score MURFREESBORO, NC- The Chowan University softball team fell to West Chester University on Sunday afternoon in a nonconference doubleheader. The Hawks lost the first contest 14-6 and dropped the second game 1-0. Chowan slides to 0-15 with the losses while the Golden Rams improve to 5-3.
Though both teams had 12 hits in the first contest, West Chester earned the win using 10 runs in the first three innings en-route to the win. Trailing 10-1 in the bottom of the third,
Leigh Ward's bunt single allowed
Chandler Bridges to score.
Tori Cragan scored on a throwing error to make the score 10-3.
The Hawks held the Golden Rams at-bay in the fourth and scored a run in the home half of the frame to gain some momentum. West Chester tacked on one run in the fifth off an RBI single and added three more in the seventh with a three-run homerun by Kim Murl. Chowan responded with two runs in the bottom of the second with
Jack Byrd's sacrifice fly and
Leighanne Huggins' RBI single up the middle. The rally was not enough to overcome the deficit, handing Chowan the 14-6 loss.
Murl knocked in five runs in the opener and also earned on the mound of the Golden Rams. She surrendered 12 hits and five earned runs while striking out one Hawk batter.
Lindsay Hewitt took the loss on the mound. She gave up 10 runs (six earned) in three innings of work.
Demi Reynolds entered the game in-relief of Hewitt.
Liz Hipple finished the game 3-4 while Ward and Huggins each collected two hits and one RBI.
The second game was a tight battle. Huggins and
Courtney Diamond were the only players in the contest to garner multiple hits for either team.
Courtney Groce held the Golden Rams scoreless until the sixth inning when an RBI double allowed West Chester to get on the board.
Chowan had the bases loaded in the home half of the frame but failed to capitalize on the scoring opportunity. Groce went the distance on the mound for the Hawks, giving up eight hits and one earned run while striking out two West Chester batters.
Katie Erb took home the win for the Golden Rams after scattering six hits in 5.2 innings of work.
Mandy McCain Madden and Meryah Breeden were both honored between games and inducted into the Fence of Fame.
The Hawks continue their hunt for the first win of the season on March 5
th when they travel to Wilson, NC to take on Barton College. First pitch is slated for 1:00pm.
