Box Score SALEM, VA- The Chowan University softball team split a pair of nonconference games on Saturday afternoon in Salem, VA. The Hawks hung on to edge West Liberty 8-7 in extra innings to start off the day but fell short in a 6-5 setback to Millersville.
Lindsay Hewitt earned the win for Chowan against the Hilltoppers.
Courtney Baker had a homerun in the first game for the Blue and White. Please note that statistics were not available for Chowan's game against West Liberty at the time of this release.
An RBI single by
Liz Hipple in the top of the first gave the Hawks an early 1-0 lead against the Marauders. Millersville answered in their half of the frame when Ashley Cantiello laced an RBI single through the right side to tie the score 1-1. A Hawk error in the bottom of the second gave the Marauders an additional run and an RBI double in the third put Millersville ahead 3-1. The Marauders plated another run in the bottom of the fourth and two in the sixth using an RBI single and double to gain a 6-1 advantage.
With two outs and runners on first and second in the top of the seventh, Hipple came through with another RBI single to keep hope alive for the Hawks. Baker blasted a three-run home run to center to make the score 6-5 and
Kayla Brady followed with a base hit but Cantiello struck out the final Hawk batter of the contest to secure the victory for the Marauders.
Hipple and
Tori Cragan each tallied two hits for Chowan. Baker and Hipple combined for all five of the Hawks' RBIs against the Marauders.
Courtney Groce suffered the loss on the mound. She scattered 10 hits and surrendered six runs (three earned).
Danielle DiFilippo paced Millersville with two hits and two RBI in the win.
Chowan will take the field again on Sunday in a 9:00am contest against Shippensburg.
