Box Score PETERSBURG, VA- The Chowan University softball team improved to 3-15 on the season after earning two wins against CIAA opponents Fayetteville State and Shaw on Monday afternoon. The Hawks topped the Lady Broncos 10-2 to start out the day before defeating the Lady Bears 9-0 in the nightcap. Chowan remains perfect in the league with a 3-0 record with the CIAA victories.
The Hawks scored early and often against Fayetteville, plating runs in each and every inning of the contest. Back-to-back RBI doubles by
Tori Cragan and
Liz Hipple followed by a Lady Bronco error gave Chowan an early 3-0 advantage. A sacrifice fly and passed ball in the top of the second gave the Hawks two more runs. The Lady Broncos responded in their half of the frame with an RBI double and single to make the score 5-2.
Chowan tacked on a run in the third using a Fayetteville State error and used
Jack Byrd's RBI double to center to pull away 7-2 in the fourth inning. A passed ball and RBI singles from
Brook Bowen and
Leighanne Huggins led to three more runs for the Hawks resulting in a 10-2 victory.
Courtney Groce earned the win on the mound, her second in as many days. She scattered nine hits while striking out two Lady Bronco batters.
Leigh Ward, Bowen, and Huggins each tallied two hits for the Blue and White.
The Hawks scored in the bottom of the first against Shaw thanks to an RBI single from
Liz Hipple. Chowan plated two additional runs in the bottom of the third before exploding for six runs in the fourth after six hits and one Lady Bear error.
Demi Reynolds picked up the win against Shaw after throwing five innings and holding the Lady Bears to six hits. She had five strikeouts in the victory.
Tori Cragan, Bowen, Hipple and Reynolds combined to collect eight of the team's 12 hits in the win.
Chowan travels to the University of Mount Olive on Wednesday to take on the Trojans. First pitch is slated for 4:00pm.
