Trojans Topple Hawks

Box Score ANDERSON, SC- The Chowan University softball team concluded their season opening weekend road trip with two losses to #20 Anderson University on Sunday afternoon.  The Hawks fell 8-0 in the first game and 9-1 in the second game.  Chowan slips to 0-6 on the season after the losses while the Trojans improve to 6-0. 
 
The Hawks were held to seven hits over the course of the afternoon while Anderson hammered out 23 hits during the doubleheader. 
 
The Trojans scored in the home half of the first to take an early 1-0 lead and used a sacrifice fly, RBI single, and three-run homer to pull away 6-0 after two complete innings of play.  Anderson tacked on two more runs in the home half of the fourth and held the Hawks at-bay through the fifth to secure the 8-0 win. 
 
Courtney Baker, Tori Cragan, and Liz Hipple each collected base knocks for the Hawks in the first game.   Abby Child paced the Trojans with three hits and five RBI while Molly Child and Danielle Swygert each collected two hits. 
 
Courtney Groce suffered the loss on the mound for the Hawks after giving up five hits and six earned runs in two innings.  Demi Reynolds entered the game in-relief of Groce and surrendered four hits and two runs in the final two innings of the contest.  Katelynn Houser earned the win for Anderson. 
 
The Trojans struck first again in the night cap using a two-run homerun in the bottom of the first to gain an early 2-0 advantage.  Anderson added five runs in the home half of the second after two two-run homeruns and an RBI single built the lead to 7-0.  Chowan responded in the top of the third when Chandler Bridges scored on a passed ball to make the score 7-1. 
 
Anderson scored two additional runs in the bottom of the sixth to secure the 9-1 victory. 
 
Cragan, Hipple, Bridges and Leigh Ward combined for four hits in the night cap while Jessica Neidigh, Molly Child, Danielle Swygert and Charlotte Sieber each garnered multiple hits for Anderson. 
 
Reynolds took the loss on the mound for Chowan in game two, giving up 10 hits and seven runs (six earned) in two innings.  Lindsay Hewitt entered the game in-relief and surrendered two runs (one earned) off five hits while striking out two batters in three innings.  Lauren Rudesheim earned the win for Anderson. 
 
The Hawks return to action on Thursday when they travel to Wilson, NC to take on Barton College.  The doubleheader is slated to begin at 1:00pm.
