Box Score MURFREESBORO, NC- The Chowan University women's basketball team defended their home court on Saturday afternoon in a 58-49 win over crosstown rival Elizabeth City State University. The CIAA Northern Division victory moves the Hawks to 11-11 overall and 5-6 in the league. After the loss, the Lady Vikings slide to 5-16 on the year and 2-10 against CIAA competition.
Rachel Gostomski led all players in the contest with 16 points, with 12 of those points coming from behind the three point arc.
Alisha Mobley added 12 points in the win while
Janelle Murphy and
Courtni Williams tallied eight points in the effort.
Kaela Nelson hauled in a team-high 10 rebounds (three offensive, ten defensive).
Chelsey Davis scored a team-high 14 points for Elizabeth City State while DeShera Boone added 11 points of her own. Jasmine Nixon scooped in a team-high eight rebounds (three offensive, five defensive).
The Lady Vikings scored first in the contest but the Hawks responded with an 8-0 run to pull ahead 10-2 at the 15:49 mark. Elizabeth City State fought back to pull within two points (12-10) with 12:25 left in the half. The score was tied on three different occasions over the course of the next five minutes before the Hawks pulled away with a 28-25 lead heading into halftime.
Chowan never trailed in the entire second half. The Lady Vikings rallied from behind to knot the score three times in the first seven minutes of play but the Hawks continued to stay in control. With the score tied 41-41 and 9:12 left in the game, Gostomski drained a three-pointer which sparked a 12-0 run for the Hawks.
The Hawks led by as many as 14 points (57-43) at the 3:01 mark and confidently closed out the game with the 58-49 victory.
Chowan will be back in action on Wednesday when they travel to Virginia State University for a CIAA Northern Division match-up. Tip-off is slated for 5:30pm.
