Box Score TRAVELERS REST, SC- The Chowan University softball team dropped two games to the North Greenville Crusaders on Saturday afternoon. The losses move the Hawks to 0-4 on the short season while North Greenville improves to 2-2.
The Hawks got on the board first in the opening game when
Courtney Groce scored on a wild pitch in the top of the third inning. The Crusaders answered back in their half of the frame with an RBI single by Tori Freedman. Scoring ceased for both teams until the bottom of the sixth inning when Sara Armstrong's two-run single for the Crusaders put North Greenville ahead 3-1.
Chowan pulled within one run of the Crusaders when an RBI single by
Liz Hipple scored
Leigh Ward to make the score 3-2. The Hawks failed to capitalize on a bases loaded situation in the same inning and suffered the 3-2 setback.
Groce pitched three innings in the contest and surrendered seven hits and one run.
Alora Lincoln took the loss on the mound after giving up three hits and two runs.
Rachel Glazebook earned the win on the mound in game one for the Crusaders. She collected 15 strikeouts and held the Hawks to seven hits and two run en-route to the win.
Courtney Baker was the lone Hawk to garner multiple hits in the loss.
The Hawks struck first again in the nightcap when
Demi Reynolds' single allowed
Tori Cragan to score in the opening frame. Morgan Roach homered for North Greenville to lead off the bottom of the second and knot the score 1-1. The Crusaders tacked on two more runs in the fourth inning thanks to an RBI double by Jordan Willingham and an RBI single by Jordan Farmer.
Down but not out, the Hawks used a three run fifth inning to take a narrow 4-3 advantage.
Chandler Bridges and Baker each had RBI singles in the frame while a fielder's choice allowed Cragan to score.
North Greenville scored two runs in the fourth and two additional runs in the fifth to take a 7-4 advantage. An RBI single by Hipple gave the Hawks their fifth run of the contest in the top of the seventh, but Sarah Armstrong got out of a bases loaded jam on the mound to secure the 7-5 victory for the Crusaders. She earned the win after throwing all seven innings for North Greenville.
Lincoln took the loss for the Hawks in the nightcap after giving up five runs on five hits. Cragan and Baker each collected two hits in game two while Hipple knocked in two RBI.
The Hawks continue their weekend road trip on Sunday when they take on #20 Anderson (SC) in a doubleheader. First pitch is slated for 12:00pm.
