Hawks Slay Vikings

Phoenix Butler-Poole had 21 points for the Hawks on Saturday.
Box Score MURFREESBORO, NC- The Chowan University men's basketball team earned their first CIAA Northern Division win of the season on Saturday afternoon in an 89-82 win over Elizabeth City State University.  The Vikings fall to 11-11 overall and 6-6 in the league after the loss while the Hawks improve to 9-12 on the year and 3-8 against CIAA competition. 
 
Five Chowan players scored double-digit points in the win.  Pheonix Butler-Poole notched a team-high 21 points while Tiron Brown added 17 points.  Mark Anthony Buright followed with 16 points and Warren Powers and Kortez Smith added 12 points for the Blue and White.    
 
Miykael Faulcon of Elizabeth City State led all players in the game with 26 points.  Dominique Byrd chipped in 14 points before fouling out of the game. 
 
The Vikings came out firing at the start of the first half and never trailed in the first 20 minutes of play.  The Hawks battled to tie the score twice within the first five minutes of the game, but Elizabeth City State retained the advantage and built their lead to 12 points before closing out the half with a 44-39 lead. 
 
The start of the second half saw the Vikings take an 11 point advantage (62-51) with 14:21 left in the game.  A three-pointer by Mark Anthony Buright on the next possession sparked a 14-0 run for Chowan, shifting the score and the momentum back in favor of the Hawks (65-62).
 
The Hawks and Vikings traded baskets as the minutes ticked away.  A lay-up by DeCarlos Anderson at the 3:33 mark put Elizabeth City State up 77-74 with 3:33 remaining in the game.  Butler-Poole responded with a three-pointer for the Hawks to the score and Powers followed with a lay-up to give the Hawks a 79-77 lead.  Chowan held on to the advantage to close out the game with the 89-82 win. 
 
Chowan returns to action on Wednesday when they head to Petersburg, VA to take on the Virginia State Trojans.  Tip-off is slated for 7:30pm.
