Hawks Claim Second Straight Win, Top Bluefield State

MURFREESBORO, NC- The Chowan University men's basketball team earned their second straight win of the week on Wednesday evening in an 80-66 victory over nonconference opponent Bluefield State College.  The Hawks improve to 8-12 win the win while the Big Blues slip to 6-13 after the setback. 
 
Kortez Smith led all players in the contest with 19 points.  Phoenix Butler-Poole and Ashante Ross followed with 17 points for the Blue and White.  Ross hauled in a team-high 10 rebounds (four offensive, six defensive). 
 
Shakir Dunning led the Big Blues with 16 points in the loss while Joseph Dawkins and Treon Claiborne added 14 and 12 points respectively. 
 
The first half was closely contested as each team battled for control.  With the score tied at the 9:45 mark, Claiborne and Remar Brothers each drained three-pointers to put Bluefield State ahead 25-19.  The six point lead was the largest of the half and of the game for the Big Blues.  The Hawks battled back to tie the score 33-33 with 3:57 left in the half but headed into halftime trailing 43-41. 
 
The second half was a different story as Chowan maintained the lead for the remainder of the contest.  A 9-2 run put the Hawks ahead 50-45 with 15:51 left in the game.  Smith's lay-up with 4:37 on the clock allowed Chowan to take a comfortable 69-58 advantage before closing out the game with the 80-66 victory. 
 
The Hawks return to action on Saturday when they host cross-town rival Elizabeth City State University in a CIAA Northern Division match-up.  Tip-off is slated for 4:00pm in the Helms Center.
