Box Score NEWPORT NEWS, VA- The Chowan University men's basketball team snapped a three game losing streak on Monday evening in a decisive 109-67 win over the Apprentice School. The Hawks improve to 7-12 with the win while the Builders slip to 13-8 after the loss.
Twelve different Hawks scored in the victory with
Warren Powers leading the way. Powers led all players in the contest with 16 points.
Kortez Smith and
Phoenix Butler-Poole added 15 and 14 points respectively with Dominque Terry,
Jalen Marshall, and
Mark Anthony Buright all scoring double-digits points. The Hawks shot 63.9% from the floor en-route to the victory, scored 33 points off turnovers and had their bench players account for 62 of the team's total points. Additionally, six different Hawk players combined for 14 three-points in the win.
Zach Zastrow led the effort for the Builders with 15 points while Jamal Curry added 10 points of his own. Zastrow drained four of the teams' six three-pointers in the loss.
Both teams battled for control in the first three minutes of play. Trailing 6-5 with 17:14 left to play, a three-pointer by Butler-Poole sparked a 19-0 run for the Hawks, giving them a 24-6 lead at the 13:32 mark. The Builders were unable to respond and Chowan built their lead to 60-25 at the half.
The second half was much like the first as the Hawks led by at least 35 points for the remainder of the contest. A three-pointer by
Kyree Bethel with 11:45 left in the game gave the Hawks an 85-38 lead. The 47 point advantage was the largest of the contest for Chowan, and allowed the Hawks to easily secure the 109-67 nonconference victory.
Chowan continues nonconference play on Wednesday when they host Bluefield State in the Helms Center. Tip-off is slated for 7:30pm.
