Box Score MURFREESBORO, NC- The Chowan University women's basketball team dropped a 69-57 decision to the visiting Lady Trojans of Virginia State University on Monday evening. The setback puts the Hawks at 11-14 on the season and 5-9 in the CIAA while the Lady Trojans improve to 22-1 overall and 13-1 in the league.
Rachel Gostomski led the effort for the Hawks with `14 points in the loss.
Courtni Williams chipped in 11 points followed by
Alisha Mobley with nine points. The Lady Trojans were led by Lamesha Deal who tallied 15 points while Jessica Lyons and Shakirah Gray chipped in 14 apiece.
The Hawks used a jumper by Williams to score first in the contest, and built a 14-6 lead at the 14:18 mark using a three pointer by Gostomski. Chowan maintained the advantage until the 4:20 mark when a jumper by Pryncess Tate-Dublin gave the Lady Trojans a 28-26 lead, their first of the game. Virginia State stayed in control from that point forward and took a 35-30 lead heading into halftime.
A three point by Gostomski with 16:47 left in the game returned the lead to Chowan (39-37) but the comeback was short lived as a lay-up by Lyons and jumper by Gray handed the lead back to Virginia State. The Lady Trojans held on to the advantage for the rest of the game and easily secured the 69-57 win.
Chowan returns to the Helms Center on Wednesday evening in their final home game of the regular season. The Hawks host Lincoln (PA) at 5:30pm and will celebrate Senior Night prior to the contest.
