Box Score MURFREESBORO, NC- The Chowan University men's basketball team saw a five game win streak come to an end on Monday evening with a 76-62 loss to Virginia State in CIAA Northern competition. The Hawks move to 11-13 on the year and 5-9 in the league while the Trojans improve to 13-11 overall and 6-8 against CIAA competition.
Ashante Ross led the effort for the Hawks with 18 points in the loss.
Alex Tharp followed with a career-high 13 points and
Mark Anthony Buright chipped in 11 points for the Blue and White. The Trojans had four players score double-digit points with James Vann tallying 15, Chris Grier and Lamar Kearse adding 13 apiece, and Amiel Terry chipping in 12 points.
The Trojans outscored the Hawks 24-14 in the paint and took advantage of 12 Hawk turnovers to score 24 points. Virginia State's bench players outscored Chowan 76-39 on the evening. The Trojans got on the board first to start the contest, using a lay-up by Lamar Kearse to take an early 2-0 advantage. A made free throw by Terry with 6:55 on the clock put Virginia State ahead 25-15. Chowan battled to close in on the Trojans but headed into halftime trailing 35-25.
Virginia State extended their lead to 40-27 at the 17:56 mark. Chowan used a 10-1 sparked by a three-pointer by Buright to make the score 41-37 with 12:42 remaining in the game. The game remained close until the 9:35 mark when a 6-0 run by Virginia State left the Hawks trailing 49-39.
The Trojans continued to build on the momentum and closed out the game with the 76-62 win. Chowan returns to the Helms Center on Wednesday evening when they host Lincoln University (PA) in a CIAA Northern Division match-up. Tip-off is slated for 7:30pm. The Hawks will celebrate Senior Night prior to the game.
