Box Score PETERSBURG, VA- The Chowan University women's basketball team came up short on Tuesday afternoon in a 51-47 decision to the #14 Virginia State University Lady Trojans. The Hawks move to 11-12 on the year with the loss and slip to 5-7 in league play. Virginia State improves to 20-1 overall and 11-1 against CIAA competition.
Alisha Mobley led the effort for the Hawks with 14 points in the loss. She was the only Chowan player to score double-digit points.
Summer Curtis and Mobley each grabbed six rebounds for the Blue and White. Chowan bench players accounted for 25 of the team's 47 points.
Jessica Lyons and Pryncess Tate-Dublin scored 12 and 10 points respectively for the Lady Trojans. Virginia State scored 10 points off turnovers and 11 second chance points in the win.
The entire game was closely contested as the score was tied nine times and featured 14 lead changes. The Hawks and Lady Trojans matched each other bucket for bucket during the opening half. A three-pointer at the 5:32 mark by
Janelle Murphy put the Hawks ahead by three points (17-14), which was the largest lead of the half by either team. Mobley drained a free throw with 40 seconds left in the half to give Chowan a narrow 22-21 lead heading into halftime.
With the game tied 34-34 midway through the second half, back-to-back jumpers by Tate-Dubline gave the Lady Trojans a 38-34 advantage. Virginia State held on to the lead for the remainder of the contest, and snuck past Chowan with the 51-47 divisional win.
The Hawks return to the Helms Center on Saturday when they host Bowie State University in a CIAA Northern Division match-up. Tip-off is slated for 2:00pm. Chowan hosts their 6
