Box Score MURFREESBORO - The Chowan University men's basketball picked up a season opening win after soaring by Barber-Scotia College 119-72. Six Chowan players scored double-figures and 13 different Hawks recorded points in the win. While Chowan improves to 1-0, Barber-Scotia falls to 1-4 on the season.
Kortez Smith came off the bench to lead all scorers with 22 points.
Chowan hit 17 three-pointers in the win and shot 66% from the floor. Smith was 6-7 from three-point land and 8-10 from the floor for his 22 points.
Michael Adams hit five three pointers in the game and was 8-14 from the floor for 21 points.The Hawks held the Sabers to 36% (21-59) from the floor in the game. Sixty-four of Chowan's points came from the bench in the win.
Joining Smith and Adams in double-figures was
Josh Mellette who scored 15 points,
Dauson Womack with 14 points,
Carlos Arroyo who scored 13 points, and
Kyree Bethel with 12 points.
Tiron Brown dished out eight assists in the victory
ShaQuilee Wilson paced the Sabers with 20 points in the loss while Walter Jackson added 18 points in the setback. Christopher Calcan chipped in 12 points and Rashad Green followed with 11 points for Barber-Scotia. Wilson grabbed a team-high seven rebounds.
The Hawks came out strong right from the start as Adams got the momentum rolling with a layup to start the contest. Green answered with a basket for the Sabers, but from there it was all about the Hawks as Chowan maintained the lead for the remainder of the contest.
Chowan held a 57-32 lead heading into halftime and stayed in control of the second half en-route to the win.
Carlos Arroyo's three-pointer with 2:59 left in the game gave the Hawks a 50 point lead, their largest of the contest.
Chowan will host the Virginia University of Lynchburg on Tuesday, November 18th at 7:30pm in their next outing.
