Box Score RALEIGH, NC- The Chowan University men's basketball team dropped their fourth straight contest on Monday evening in a 77-60 loss to St. Augustine's University. The Hawks slip to 4-7 overall and 0-3 in CIAA play while the Falcons improve to 9-3 on the year and 2-0 in the league.
Warren Powers led the effort with 15 points in the loss followed by
Ashante Ross with 14 points.
Phoenix Butler-Poole added 11 points of his own for the Hawks. Butler-Poole and Powers each hauled in a team-high six rebounds.
Amere May of St. Augustine's proved to be a force to be reckoned with as he led all players in the contest with 27 points. Joel Kindred and Tashaun Stockdale each chipped in 13 points for the Falcons. Stocksdale collected seven rebounds over the course of the evening (one offensive, seven defensive).
The Falcons got on the board first in the contest after a three-pointer by Keith Crawford. With 16:04 on the clock and trailing 11-4, the Hawks orchestrated a 6-0 run to pull within one point of St. Augustine's (11-10). The Falcons responded with a 9-0 run of their own to take a 19-10 advantage with 8:38 remaining in the first half. St. Augustine's led by as many as 11 points at the 2:28 mark before heading into halftime with a 36-29 lead.
Two made free throws by Powers at the start of the second half cut the deficit to five points for Chowan. Despite trailing the Falcons for the entire second half, the Hawks managed to pull within six points (62-56) at the 3:44 mark. A 7-0 run by St. Augustine's capped by May's jumper put the game out of reach and left the Hawks trailing 69-56 before suffering the 77-60 setback.
Chowan returns to Murfreesboro on Thursday evening to take on Johnson C. Smith. Tip-off against the Golden Bulls is scheduled for 7:30pm.
