Bears Trump Hawks in CIAA Crossover Play

Box Score RALEIGH, NC- The Chowan University men's basketball team suffered an 80-57 setback at the hands of Shaw University on Saturday afternoon in CIAA play.  The loss drops the Hawks to 3-6 on the year and 0-2 in the league.  The Bears improve to 4-8 overall and 2-0 against CIAA competition.   
 
Kyree Bethel led all players in Saturday's contest with 16 points and three three-pointers in the loss.  Warren Powers followed with 12 points and 10 rebounds (six offensive, four defensive) to earn a double-double. 
 
Four Shaw players scored double digit points en route to the victory.  Koron Reed paced the Bears with 14 points followed by Andre Paulk with 13 points.  Curtis Hines and Larry Richardson each contributed 12 points in the victory.  Reed hauled in a team-high 10 rebounds (three offensive, seven defensive). 
 
The Hawks remained close on the Bears' heels throughout the first half but never managed to gain a lead of more than one point.  A three pointer by Brown knotted the score 16-16 with 9:03 remaining before halftime.  The Bears responded with an 8-0 run to gain a 24-16 advantage with 6:13 left on the clock.  Chowan battled to pull within two points (32-30) with 37 seconds left in the half, but Aquil Younger sank two free throws for the Bears to give Shaw a 34-30 lead heading into halftime. 
 
Chowan fought to keep the score within striking distance at the start of the second half.  Hines' two made free throws midway through the second half gave the Bears a double digit lead (54-55) which they maintained through the duration of the contest.  Shaw led by as many as 25 points (80-55) with 1:19 left in the game before pulling away with the 80-57 win. 
 
The Hawks continue the hunt for their first CIAA win of the season on Monday when they travel to St. Augustine's University.  Tip-off against the Falcons is slated for 7:30pm.
