Box Score FAYETTEVILLE, NC – The Chowan University women's basketball team dropped a 58-50 decision in CIAA crossover play against Fayetteville State on Thursday evening. The Hawks slip to 6-5 overall and 0-1 in league play after the loss while the Lady Broncos improve to 8-2 and 1-0 in the CIAA.
Alisha Mobley led the effort for the Hawks with 12 points in the contest.
Courtni Williams and
RyJae Anderson chipped in 11 and 10 points respectively for Chowan. Mobley hauled in a team-high eight rebounds while
Summer Curtis and
Kaela Nelson grabbed six of their own.
For Fayetteville State, Deja Middleton led all players in the game with 19 points followed by Amber Calvin with 15 points. The Lady Broncos started out the contest with a 12-0 run over the course of the first seven minutes and maintained the lead for the duration of the contest. A lay-up by Williams at the 13:39 mark finally put the Hawks on the board.
A made free throw by
Shantae Springs with 6:06 left in the half brought Chowan with seven points of the Lady Broncos (20-13). Fayetteville State responded with a 9-0 run to pull away 29-13 with 4:03 on the clock. Nicole Graham's three pointer for the Lady Broncos at the 1:27 mark solidified a 34-19 advantage, propelling Fayetteville State to a 34-21 lead at halftime.
The Lady Broncos continued to build on their momentum from the first half and led by as many as 22 points (58-36) with just under five minutes remaining in the contest. Chowan refused to go away quietly and orchestrated a 14-0 run before falling to Fayetteville State 58-50.
The Hawks will return to the hard court on Saturday when they travel to Shaw University. Tip-off is slated for 2:00pm.
