Bulldogs Clip Hawks

Kortez Smith had 20 points in Saturday's loss to Bowie State.
Box Score BOWIE, MD- The Chowan University men's basketball team suffered a 70-64 setback against Bowie State University on Saturday afternoon.  The CIAA Northern Division loss moves the Hawks to 6-10 overall and 2-6 in league play.  The Bulldogs improve to 9-11 overall and 3-6 in the league. 
 
Kortez Smith paced the Hawks with 20 points in the loss.  Phoenix Butler-Poole addd 13 points while Kyree Bethel chipped in 12 points.  Smith, Buter-Poole and Bethel accounted for 10 of the team's 11 three-pointers. 
 
The Bulldogs had four players score double-digits in the victory.  Andre Jackson drained 20 points while Ray Gatling added 14 of his own.  Carlos Smith and Zafir Williams added 11 and 10 points respectively. 
 
Chowan trailed 6-0 to start out the first half but battled to tie the score at the 16:03 mark after Bethel's three-pointer.  A trey by Smith with 15:26 on the clock put the Hawks ahead 9-7 and gave Chowan their first lead of the game.  Both teams exchanged baskets until the 11:27 mark when a 10-0 run by the Bulldogs gave Bowie State a 23-14 advantage with 9:05 remaining before halftime.
 
A three pointer by Jackson followed by a jumper by Gatling for Bowie State with 2:47 on the clock gave the Bulldogs a 13 point lead (35-22), their largest of the half.  The Hawks responded with an 11-0 run to pull within two points (35-33) at halftime. 
 
The second half was much like the first as the Hawks battled to stay close on Bowie State's heels.    Chowan failed to take the lead or tie the score after halftime but pulled within one point of the Bulldogs on three different occasions.  Bethel's three-pointer with 1:31 left in the game put the Hawks within three points (63-60), but Bowie State pulled away down the stretch to secure the 70-64 victory. 
 
The Hawks travel to Lincoln University (PA) on Wednesday to take on the Lions in CIAA Northern Division play.  Tip-off is slated for 7:30pm.
