Box Score ELIZABETH CITY, NC- The Chowan University women's basketball team slipped to 8-9 overall and 2-5 in CIAA competition after an 80-74 overtime loss to the Elizabeth City State Lady Vikings on Saturday evening. The CIAA Northern Division victory improves the Lady Vikings' record to 4-12 and 1-6 in the league.
Alisha Mobley led the Hawks' scoring efforts with 16 points in the loss.
Rachel Gostomski chipped in 13 points and three three-pointers while
Summer Curtis added 10 points and 11 rebounds (five offensive, six defensive).
Jadda Jeffries of Elizabeth City State led all players in the contest with 27 points. Chelsey Davis and Jasmine Walker each contributed 18 points in the Lady Vikings' first CIAA victory of the season.
The Hawks and Lady Vikings were tied 5-5 at the 14:46 mark before a 12-2 run by Elizabeth City State left Chowan trailing 17-7 with 7:24 left in the first half. A Hawk foul just before halftime led to Jeffries receiving three free throw opportunities. She made good on all three, giving the Lady Vikings a 32-21 advantage heading into halftime.
Chowan trailed by 10 points (48-38) midway through the second half. A 6-0 run capped by Mobley's layup with 8:44 on the clock brought the Hawks within four points of the Lady Vikings. Chowan and Elizabeth City State exchanged baskets down the stretch. A made free throw by
Courtni Williams for the Hawks knotted the score 61-61 with 1:43 remaining. The Hawks trailed 65-63 with just 13 seconds on the clock until a layup by Curtis iced the score 65-65 and sent the contest in overtime.
The Lady Vikings jumped to a 7-0 run to start the overtime period and never looked back. They maintained the lead for the remainder of the contest and closed out the game with an 80-74 win.
Chowan returns to their home court to host Virginia State University on January 22
nd. Tip-off against the Lady Trojans is slated for 5:30pm in the Helms Center.
