Box Score ELIZABETH CITY, NC- The Chowan University men's basketball team dropped a 60-45 CIAA Northern Division contest to Elizabeth City State University on Saturday evening. The Hawks slip to 5-9 on the year and 2-5 in the league with the loss while the Vikings improve to 9-8 overall and 4-3 in the CIAA.
Kortez Smith scored a team-high 15 points while
Kyree Bethel and
Ashante Ross each notched eight points in the loss.
Phoenix Butler-Poole hauled in 11 rebounds (two offensive, nine defensive).
Miykael Faulcon paced the Vikings with 12 points in the win. Dominique Byrd and LaShawn Alexander added 10 points of their own to help the cause.
Elizabeth City State scored nine unanswered points to open up the first half and contributed to a 20-7 advantage with 5:21 on the clock. The Hawks were unable to overcome the deficit and trailed the Vikings 27-17 at halftime.
Alston started the second half by draining a three pointer for Chowan. Butler-Poole added a trey of his own followed by another three pointer by Alston to cut the deficit to one point (27-26) with 18:21 left to play. Ross' layup at the 17:24 mark gave the Hawks their first lead of the half (28-27). The Vikings responded with a 9-0 run to pull away 35-28 with 13:57 on the clock.
Chowan battled to stay within striking distance but were unable to do so in the remainder of the contest and suffered the 60-45 setback.
The Hawks will be back in action on January 22
nd when they host Virginia State University in CIAA Northern Division competition. Tip-off is slated for 7:30pm in the Helms Center.
